PASTOR'S CORNER

Pastor's Corner

It's funny, shifting up a schedule.  You get used to patterns of life, to just doing things the way you've always done them.  Like when I started here, way back when in 2011.  I just slotted in to what seemed to be the expected hours.  Meaning Sunday, of course, and Wednesday between 11 and five or six-ish.  It worked, in that I was here.

But it also wasn't quite right, because y'all aren't here.  If you're off with kids, if you're at work?  I'd be motoring out of town just about at the time everyone else would be returning from points south.  Oh, look, I'd say, as I passed a familiar car.  There you are.

But the pattern was the pattern, and so I just kind of got used to it.

That's no longer going to be the case.  As I look ahead in the life of the church, me just being around during the day on Wednesdays doesn't seem to make sense.  It'd be better to be in connection, to be around when everyone else is.

And so, with no reason to avoid that reality, that's what I'll be doing.  From here on out, I'll be at the church until around eight on Wednesdays, which will open up space for doing some new things in the life of our little fellowship.

It's always a little peculiar, making those changes, especially when we're set in a prior pattern of life.  Comfort and repetition are much easier to engage with.  But sometimes, it's just a simple act of will to make one minor change.   That shifts, and there's a whole cascade of other realities that open up in response to that change.

As we move through life, keeping ourselves open to those little shifts is vital.

Peace of Christ, and Blessings,

David

SESSION ACTIONS

Session Meeting Summary

March 16, 2016, 7:00 PM

- The meeting opened with prayer at 7:05 pm.

- Eagle Scout Timothy Kasner updated the Session on his sidewalk project.

Timothy spoke to the garden designer who informed him that since water pools at the garden gate a landing pad area will be necessary. The Session agreed that the sidewalk should be extended to within four feet of the garden gate and that the community garden could take care of the landing pad area.

Depending on weather, the sidewalk project may begin on April 23, 2016.

- Clerk of Session Suzanne Stevens reported that she attended the annual Session Records Review on March 12, 2016 where PPC's minutes and register were approved without exception. On February 28, 2016 Julie Halstead and Ashley Hofmann were ordained and installed as elders of the class of 2018 and Pat Williams was installed as an elder of the class of 2018.

- Fellowship and Congregational Care Elder Pam Mattes informed the Session that the March 27 Easter Potluck will begin at 9:00 AM, and will be followed by the Easter egg hunt.

-  Buildings and Grounds Elder Kathy Hanna has scheduled a work day for April 9, 2016. Kathy still needs volunteers to paint the manse roof.  She reported that Saint Peter's Episcopal Church needs help assembling Easter baskets for the Frederick Rescue Mission.

- Mission Elder Krista Beyer reported that the Lord's Table continues to go well.

There will not be a youth mission this summer. However, there will be a rummage sale and plant sale to support future youth missions.

- Worship and Arts Elder Ashley Hofmann has received the palms for Palm Sunday. She is working with Monica on the Good Friday Tenebrae service. Scripture readers are still needed for the service. The Maundy Thursday agape meal will take place in Speer Hall at 7:00 p.m. A sign-up sheet for volunteers to bring flowers for the sanctuary on Sundays has been started. - Rev. David Williams reported that the cost of a replacement projector for the sanctuary will be approximately $500 -600.00. The Session agreed that David should proceed with the purchase. - It was agreed that David can take the old computers in the Manse to be recycled. - Connection Café attendance has fallen and Berry Thompson will track how many people are attending and which services are needed. - The Session agreed that David should change his office hours to begin later in the afternoon. David's new hours will begin after Easter. - It was motioned, seconded, and carried to adjourn at 8:12 p.m. Kathy Hanna closed the meeting with prayer.

MISSION

Elder Krista Beyer, 301.349., trainphee@aol.com

Youth Mission Fundraisers

While we are searching for a possible mission for our youth this summer, we will still be holding our two traditional fundraisers.

First, we will be taking orders during the month of March for our Spring Flower Sale. An order form will be located on the bulletin board in Speer Hall, along with descriptions of the available flowers. The flowers will be ordered at the beginning of April and delivered to the Church the Friday before Mother's Day (May 6th). You may also ask one of the older youth if they are participating in the sale and place an order through them or contact Catherine Beliveau at crbeliveau@gmail.com with your order.

The second fundraiser will be a rummage sale. The sale will be held on Saturday, April 2nd, from 9 to 2. We will need volunteers to set up the week before, work the sale, and help transport leftover items to St. Peter's after the sale. Donations may be left in the kitchen in the Manse between now and Easter. After Easter, donations may be brought directly to Speer Hall.

Lord's Table this Saturday (April 9th)

We're again at the second Saturday of the month. Please consider extending warmth and kindness to people who desperately need both.  St. Martin's of Tours Church, 201 South Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, at3:00pm. To sign up please contact Krista and Bill Beyer attrainphee@aol.com.  Thanks!!

Getting ready for Spring:

What do you want your church to look like?

I hope welcoming and well kept. That's our goal on the work day. Simple things like weeding around our buildings to more complex- like replacing cracked window panes and fixing the manse roof. We'll be concentrating on finishing painting around windows in the manse.

If you see something that you think needs fixing - please let me know!

Work day April 16 - 8 am-? Lunch served.

St. Peter's started a program in September this year offering lunch at no cost to students at Poolesville High School. Our rector, Ann Ritonia, heard from a few parents, past parents and teachers that there was a need for some students who may not qualify for the subsidized lunch program, or had very long days at school or were looking for a quiet place to sit, or other reasons to have lunch. Each day there are 60- 80+ students who come to St. Peter's.

We could use volunteers to help with preparation of the lunch (heating hot dogs, setting up the buffet line, etc.), and serving the food (ladling Macaroni and cheese, sloppy joe's). Preparation starts around 10 am. The students arrive in a swarm about 11:10, and they are all gone by noon. There is a little clean up, We are done by 12:15 approx.

We also welcome cash donations to fund the program.

Praying Partners

As most of you know, we have formed a new prayer group called PPC PRAYING PARTNERS.

Prayer requests  will continue to be listed in the bulletin, but we also have a group of folks who will be receiving a bi- monthly detailed prayer list so they may intentionally engage in praying for those in need.

If you would like to share a prayer request with our group, please send to Lisa Roberts-Koeser at mklisaroberts@live.com. You may request that your concern or joy be included in the regular bulletin prayer list and/ or the confidential 'Praying Partners' list.

If you would like to be part of our prayer group, please contact Lisa Roberts-Koeser at the above email or call 301-642-3857
