PASTOR'S CORNER

Pastor's Corner:

As the month of December rolls around, I'm once again cranking away on my writing.  These last six months I've spend reading and researching, interviewing and cogitating, as part of my doctoral project exploring the dynamics of healthy small communities.

One of the most fascinating parts of this study has been the discovery that big congregations...meaning the vast five-thousand-member-plus Jesus MegaCenters that seem increasingly to be the norm in the landscape of American Christianity...are really, really intentional about creating smaller churches within themselves.  In order to feel a deep sense of faith and purpose, what human beings need is not the large and the shiny.  They need a sense of intimacy, of relationships with others, of real and substantial connection.

That doesn't happen in the mall, or in a stadium, or in a sprawling auditorium.  That happens face-to-face, person to person.  It happens when you connect in the the warmth of a living room, or in a small classroom.  It happens as you walk and talk with someone you trust, or as you share a meal with friends.

Big churches do everything in their power to create these groups, in the form of cells or small groups or discussion gatherings.  Because without them, people just drift in and out.  A sense of personal engagement with the community never develops.

What matters, most of all, isn't shine and sparkle, but humble intimacy.

That truth sings in harmony with the truth of this season.  Our culture is spooling up for its great winter festival, which shines and sparkles like nothing else in the world.  It's a pretty thing, a big thing.  It is not, however, the thing that counts.

What matters is something a whole bunch smaller, and a great deal more humble.  This Advent Season, we're reminded that the end result of the season isn't particularly spectacular.  Just a couple of poor Judeans, far away from home, and a tiny baby in a manger.  Small, intimate, and...perhaps because of that...profoundly important.

May your Advent and Christmas be filled with Blessings of this Season,

Peace of Christ,

David

SESSION ACTIONS

Session Meeting Summary

November 19, 2014

- Rev. David Williams opened the meeting with prayer at 7:08 p.m.  A quorum was declared present.

- Jane Wonnell attended the meeting.  Jane wishes to become a member of Poolesville Presbyterian Church.  All present shared a summary of their faith journey.  The Session agreed that Jane Wonnell will be received as a member of PPC on December 7, 2014 by reaffirmation of faith.

Clerk of Session Suzanne Stevens introduced a representative of the Nominating Committee, who reported that they have one volunteer for elder and are looking for one more.

- Mission Elder Krista Beyer reported that the Living More Conversations on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. are going well. She suggested that the congregation could incorporate global mission into its Christmas giving by donating animals to those in need through a charity such as Heifer International.

- Buildings and Grounds Elder Dick Hanna suggested that the Connection Café doors probably do not need to be kept locked.

- Given water flow needs, Dick has decided that the gutters do not need to go back on the manse and that he will cut up the aluminum, sell it and donate the profits to PPC.

- Christian Education Elder Chris Hofmann informed the Session that the adult class study of Slow Church is going well with good attendance.  The younger Sunday School class is being held in the manse now.  There will be no Sunday School on the Sunday after Thanksgiving or the Sunday after Christmas.  The Christmas pageant will be held on December 21, 2014.

- Rev. David Williams reported that the confirmation class is going well and they are discussing their faith statements.

-Fellowship and Congregational Care Elder Pam Mattes discussed date options for the annual Christmas party.  It will be on December 14, 2014 if Pam gets enough help setting up and running things.

- Evangelism Elder Carolyn McFall will place a Christmas ad for PPC in the Monocacy Monocle and Greg will help her  design the Christmas postcard. Carolyn will be gone for Christmas and requested that other members welcome visitors while she is gone. The next LIFE dinner will be Friday, November 21, 2014 at Pat and Neville Williams home.

- Budget and Stewardship Elder Kathy Koeser handed out the proposed 2015 budget.  Elders should let her know if adjustments are needed.  The budget will be approved at the December Session meeting.

Chris Hofmann agreed to be the PPC treasurer for 2015. There was much rejoicing.

- Rev. David Williams reported that as medical dues for the PC(USA) are increasing again this year, and his family will have other insurance options come early 2015, he will be exploring ways to reduce costs and redirect funds that are currently used for health insurance towards more productive ministry purposes.

-David will see if he can find a free alternative to Constant Contact which PPC currently uses to send email to the congregation.

- It was motioned, seconded, and approved to adjourn at 8:33 p.m.   Chris Hofmann closed the meeting with prayer.

VOLUNTEERS
If you are not currently a worship volunteer, please know that we always welcome additions to our volunteer rotation in order to lighten the load.  Please let me know if you are interested.  We will be providing Youth Protection training for those working with the children at the church.  It has been more than 2 years since we last provided this training.  Therefore, all those involved with the children are asked to attend one of the training sessions.  Several training sessions, lasting at most half an hour each, will be offered in the near future.  Contact Stephanie Kasner for more information.

MUSIC
All are welcome to come make a joyful noise unto the Lord.  We will be starting weekly choir practice again this month.  Contact Monica Harwood if you would like to join or if you have any questions.
We'd love to start up Tone Chimes as well. Let Pam Mattes know if you'd like to join, it's really not hard and lots of fun!!!

Good morning,

I know that things are getting busy and hectic around this time of year, but I just wanted to extend an invitation to volunteer as a caroler this season. Carolers of all ages are welcome! The more, the merrier.

Sunday, Dec. 21st at 3:30pm

at Montgomery Village Health Care Center

My church choir (Poolesville Presbyterian) is partnering with The Holiday Project non-profit organization to provide some holiday cheer for the residents. The church choir will perform a short concert (30 mins.) in the common area of the facility, and then the choir will lead visits to patients' rooms to sing carols.

We are also invited to make cards to distribute, or bring small presents (ornaments, soaps, calendars), although these things are not required.

Attached is a flyer with more details. If you and your family are interested in joining, please shoot me a quick RSVP so that the facility can prepare for us.

Thanks!

Monica

Evangelism

GREETINGS, EVERYONE!

Picture, if you will, the uncontainable glee of a child on Christmas morning. Now picture a new person at church and think of how GOD might be feeling at that moment. Fast forward to that same person who, if he or she was not spoken to or made to feel welcome, was left feeling unimportant to that church community, possibly to GOD.

In order for our church to indeed be 'a church of extended family', we must make the effort to make all feel welcome and important. This achievement requires that each and every one of us are the welcoming face of GOD's children and church community. At the moment we each see a visitor, let us each choose the loving habit of a personal welcome, so that everyone feels a part of our warm family. David and I are often unable to speak to visitors before service (the critical welcoming period), and so it truly does take our whole congregation's involvement to achieve a family welcome for every person.

Welcoming ideas:

ˇ         Say "Welcome!"

ˇ         Exchange names

ˇ         Ask what brings them to church

ˇ         Share how you found PPC, or how long you've been attending

ˇ         Share what activities you're involved in at church

ˇ         Invite them to attend coffee hour with you after church

ˇ         Ask them if they'd like to receive our church newsletter (available in email and snail mail)

ADVERTISING

Our annual Christmas cards have been sent to the printers and our Christmas ad to Rande at the Monocle. A big shout out goes to Greg McFall for designing this year's Christmas postcard and the artwork for our Monocle ad.

BUILDING & GROUNDS

Elder Dick Hanna, 301.349.5221         hannaelectric@verizon.net

The room holding the electrical panel has been repaired. Thanks Len and Norm.

Did you notice the front door to the church is fixed? We hired someone. Please be careful when it is windy. The door being caught in a wind gust caused the problem.

We always have projects if someone wants to do something for the Church.

Please be mindful of thermostats when you leave a building. Our greatest bill is electric bill, and Speer Hall is the greatest.
